Mining Captain for Wheal Gorland Mine in Nr Scorrier.Occupation Note: Note: different sources name him as Captain of two different mines near Scorrier - both could be correct.
Captain for Forsan Wheal Mine in "back of Whitehall", CON.
GENERAL NOTES:
1. Upper Whitehouse is east of Whitehall House and separated from it by a small field. In a 1813 map it is shown as Higher Whitehall. In 1820 a Joseph MORCOM witnessed the bond taken out by Jethro HORNBLOWER's widow, who was probably still living next door at Mayfield. It is not certain if the witness was this Joseph or his son. The 1840 Tithe Map shows the younger Joseph MORCOM as leasing the house next door to Whitehall House from Lord Falmouth. It is not known if the elder Joseph continued to live at Upper Whitehouse with his son until his death in 1827.There may have been an earlier family link between the Whitehall MORCOMs and the HORNBLOWERs. Joseph Hodge MORCOM (15875) b.c. 1743 married Johanna HORNBLOWER (21917) b.c. 1735 who was the daughter of Jonathan MORCOM later of Whitehall. But, have not been able to identify the parents of Joseph Hodge MORCOM.
2. Mayfield is east of Upper Whitehall and again separated from it by a small field. From 1796 to 1820 this house was occupied by Jethro, a son of the Joseph HORNBLOWER who was a rival of James WATTS in the early development of the steam engine. Joseph had baptised all 12 of his children with biblical names beginning with "J"! Joseph HORNBLOWER died in 1780 "at Whitehall", his will being witnessed by Joseph MORCOM senior of Upper Whitehall. C.S.Forester, in his twelve novels about the purely fictitious Captain Horatio HORNBLOWER, mentions some members of this real HORNBLOWER family as supposed relatives of the Captain. By 1840 the house was being leased by a William SIMMS, a mining engineer, but occupied by Josiah GOLDSWORTHY, a copper miner, and Manoah MORCOM. Manoah was the son of Joseph MORCOM and Bridget nee SHORTHOSE. Manoah had married Frances Jane COCKS in Stoke Damerel, DEV in 1838 but the 1840 tithe records only name the heads of households. [It cannot be ruled out that this was not another Manoah (15301), uncle of the first named.]3. Across the road from Whitehall House is a thatched cottage which was once a smithy. It is not clear from the 1/2500 map of 1881 whether any of the nearby small cottages were also regarded as part of Whitehall district
In the Royal Cornwall Museum, Truro, there is a well known painting by John OPIE c. 1786 of "A Gentleman and a Miner with a Specimen of Copper" with Polperro Mine in the background. The gentleman is believed to be Thomas DANIELL who was a leading merchant adventurer in the Cornish mines. The MORCOM captain has been named in several sources as "Thomas MORCOM, who later worked with Richard TREVITHIC, testing the latter's innovatory steam powered pumping equipment at St Agnes"Other sources refer to a Captain MORCOM who is said to have been in partnership in 1793 with Richard TREVITHICK in making trials of pumping engines at Seal Hole Mine in St Agnes.I believe the MORCOM at Seal Hole and in the painting was more likely to be Capt. Joseph MORCOM who lived within four miles of the mine at Whitehall. His near neighbours in Higher Whitehall house were members of the HORNBLOWER family who had at first used the new Watts and Boulton steam engines in their mines. James Watt stayed for a time in an engineer Mr Wilson's house at Whitehall in c.1777-8, and his partner Matthew BOULTON was living in Whitehall in 1782-4. As the three large houses at Whitehall were close together Joseph MORCOM must have known Boulton and Watt personally as well as being more closely acquaited with the Hornblower familyIn 1781 Jonathan HORNBLOWER patented a double cylinder engine, but development was delayed partly because of an accusation that he had broken the Boulton and Watts patents. In 1791 he enlisted the help of a 20 yr old Richard Trevithick (who later built the first full-scale working railway steam locomotive) to install and assess a successful model at Tincroft Mine. At the same date Captain Joseph MORCOM was making a trial of a small Boulton & Watt engine at Sea Hole. Comparison of the two trials appeared to favour Hornblower's engine, but there were accusation that the Boulton & Watts engine tested was less powerful than most of its kind.I have been unable to find a contemporary Thomas MORCOM who is likely to have been working with Thomas DANIELL so it seems far more probable that the Opie's painting is of Joseph MORCOM
It is remarkable how prominent descendants of this couple were during the 19th century. The majority of MORCOM/B/E wills during the centruy were made by members of this family and they also account for a large majority of MORCOM refernces in the 19th century UK Newspapers.

GENERAL NOTE:
Mrs Barbara Carter (28 Okus Road, Swindon, Wilts SN1 4JQ in 1981) reported a baptism for Joseph MORCOM in 1782 at Truro Kenwyn Street Baptist Church - no other details and not known if it is this one.She got the information from Lawson Edwards' Index to Cornish Non-Conformist Registers.Weekly News Friday 20 Jan 1843At Whitehall, on the morning of Friday last, Captain Joseph Morcom, aged 61 years. - It is rarely that we accord the death of a man more generally or deservedly esteemed. His simplicity of manners, frankness of temper, warmth and kind-heartedness of feeling, and perf[?]tegrity of intention, were qualities which won for him, during life, a very high degree of general respect, and will cause his memory to be long and affectionately cherished. His death was awfully sudden. He had retired to bed apparently in perfect health, but soon after midnight awoke complaining of indisposition, and was instantly a corpse. Perhaps, however, had the manner of his removal been placed at his own option, it would scarcely have been otherwise. The sincerely pious feeling which are in an even current through his life leaves to his bereaved friends the most consolatory assurance that however brief might be his notice to enter upon another state of being, he would be found in readiness for the change. - Yesterday morning his remains were interred in the New Cemetery, Truro, and were followed by a numerous concourse of friends who were anxious to pay this last tribute to his worth.
