GENERAL NOTE:
Kae LEWIS a relative of George wrote on 25 dec 1004 in New-Zealand-LRobert George Staveley jumped ship from the ship Mary Ann in Lyttleton about 1859. It is possible he was third mate at the time. We have the story of his escape:"When his ship arrived in Lyttleton he, with another sailor ran away. Therewas a small wayside inn on the top of Port Hill and after a drink his matedecided to return to the ship but Robert Staveley decided to stay so he hidin a haystack on Canterbury Plains for two days without food, knowing theOfficers of the ship would search for him, which indeed they did; havingthen evaded them, he proceeded to Alfred Forest and did not write home formany years." Written by his son Charles. Robert then lived openly in NZfor the rest of his life under his own name and did not have a policerecord. On the contrary, the small town of Staveley on Canterbury Plainswas named after him!"
