GENERAL NOTES:
The Washington Post of 8 September 1903 reported that "Joseph E MARCOMBE, assistant librarian of the Masonic library at Cedar Rapids, Iowa, and well known in that State as a correpondent and an editor of the "Masonic Bulletin", had been employed as a press agent by Chekib Bey, the minister to the United States from the near Orient, Chekib Bey was acting in the name of the Sultan of Turkey. Joseph was to go via Constantinople to Macedonia to report to the world " the true facts concerning the internecine struggle in which the world is taking a lively interest and receiving inaccurate or garbled accounts" . The Sultan was concerned about the previous reporting of the Armenian massacres and of the abduction of Miss STONE an American missionary. Joseph was paid a year's salary in advance.
The Masonic World recorded that Joseph was honoured by the Far West Lodge, of which he was a founder on March 5th 194? [Possibly 1942, the year of his death, as there is a reference to his having been in California for nearly 25 yrs]Past grand master William P Filmer described Joseph as "without doubt the premier writer of Masonry in the world today" and proclaimed that "if all the grand Lodges of the world should meet, it would be Joseph E. Morcombe who would be the outstanding Mason present."Past Grand Master Charles A Adams said that he had known Joe Morcombe for 25 years and "In these years the application of the principles of Masonry have changed materially and the man most responsible for these changes is Joe Morcombe." Charles ADAMS described how he had first brought Brother MORCOMBE to California from Iowa in 1917.Joseph had been writing about Masonry for 42 years and had pioneered the discussion of general public issues among Masons.In his response Joseph MORCOM traced his interest in Masonry from childhood to entrance into a Lodge.[Full article is in the California file.]

Robert Evans - Early Evangelical Revivals in South AustraliaCHAPTER FOURTEEN - EARLY REVIVALS IN SOUTH AUSTRALIA to 1865"It was during that three-week break [following March 28 1875} that clearer signs of the revival began to appear in the Bible Christian Church at the [Moonta]Mines. This followed the sudden death of one of the young ladies in that congregation. "The work began on Sunday evening April 4th, at Moonta Mines chapel, where a funeral sermon was preached by Mr. Kelley on the death of a much-loved young Sabbath scholar, Kate Morcombe. The sermon is given in the local (Moonta Bible Christian) magazine, and is a powerful, touching, appeal to the young." (3.) The editor of the "South Australian Bible Christian Magazine" then provides a very lengthy quotation from the local magazine, which had been written by a Mr. James Stephens. Apart from Mr. Kelley, the Bible Christian Minister in Moonta at the time was the Rev. Octavius Lake. Lake's wife was the famous woman evangelist, Serena Thorne Lake, a member of the Thorne family from Cornwall, which figured so prominently in Bible Christian history. "Kate Morcombe was greatly beloved in the school, and her winning manner and amiable disposition endeared her to all her companions and acquaintances, so that her early and almost sudden death was partly the cause of the scene that was witnessed in the prayer meeting after the sermon. Fifteen precious souls were brought to God." (4.)Later in the Chapter there is the following reference to events during May 1875 Numbers of conversions occurred in the six o'clock class meetings. "....especially those conducted by brethren Morcombe and Beazley. At some of these meetings 10, 20, and 30 have found peace through believing in Christ, and at all the class meetings in connection with this Church similar results have been realised." (11.) Was this a reference to Kate's father George MORCOMBE?
