GENERAL NOTES:
Notes for CAROLINE TREWARTHA:IRON MOUNTAIN,MI NEWSPAPER OBITUARY; dated Thursday, ? ? 1906NOBLE LIFE ENDEDMRS.CAPT JOHN WICKS GONE TO HER HEAVENLY HOME.Had Been a Resident of Iron Mountain for Twenty-five Years - Funeral Friday Afternoon.Caroline Trewatha, the beloved wife Of Capt.John Wicks, the pioneer miner and explorer of the upper peninsula, departed this life, last Sunday morning at 9:30o'clock at the family hcme,at the corner of West C street and Carpenter avenueafter an illness of but a few days. While the venerable old lady had been ailing for several months, her demisewas entirely unexpected.Grandma Wicks, as she was lovingly known by the people of Iron Mountain, was born on April 14th, 1820, atCallington, Cornwall, England, and was therefore eighty-six years of age at the time of her death. On June 17th,1841, she was united in marriage to Capt. John Wicks and their companionship of nearly sixty-fiveyears had been one of supreme happiness and confidence. The union was a blending of two lives particularlyadapted to each other, resulting in the establishment of a perfect home.Grandma WICKS was the mother of eleven children and is survived by eight of them, all of whom are inattendance at the funeral, viz.:Mrs. E. Morrorn, Tower, Minn.Mrs. Lydia Jeffery, Calumet, Mich.Mrs. Caroline Hicks, Linden, Wis.John Wicks, Bessmer, Mich.Mrs. W. L. Gould, Harrisburg, S. D.Alfred J. Wicks, Butte, Montana.Mrs. Harriet Parry, Iron Mountain.Mrs, Alex F. Snyder, Victor, Colo. There are twenty-four grandchildren and twenty-two great grandghildren also living. The funeral will be held from the Central M. E. church, of which she had been amost faithful and consistent member ever since its organization, this afternoon at two o'clock, the Rev.Kerridge, assisted by other city pastors, conducting the services. As a mark of respect to her husband, who was a charter member, all members of the Iron Mountain Lodge,No.388, Free and Accepted Masons, will attend the funeral in a body.4Capt. John Wicks came to the United, States and the upper peninsula in 1852, locating in Ontonagon county. Two years later, in 1854, he was joined by Mrs. Wicks and the babies. In 1864, the family removed from Ontonagon to Linden, WI and in 1879 came to Iron Mountain. In 1881, theWick's family removed to Keel Ridge, at that time a promising mining location, but in 1883, when the mine wasabandoned, returned to this city, and since then have been highly respected residents. The life of Grandma Wicks has been a most eventful one. Coming to the peninsula when it was nothing but awilderness, she had experienced all the hardships of pioneer life, but these trials were always borne with a trueChristian spirit and a cheerfulness of disposition that must have made her a helpmate in the very strongest senseof the expression. Not only were the home duties of Grandma Wicks such as would overwhelm the average woman, but theprominent position occupied by her husband in the communities in which they resided, made it impossible, hadshe been so disposed,, to escape many additional duties. It has been said that, in the pioneer days, the home ofCapt and Mrs. John Wicks was he haven of the heavy-hearted and the distressed. And it can be said that theweary-hearted always secured comfort and the distressed were always relieved. She was indeed a noble woman. It is well that God permitted her to be with us for so many years. The world has been better and brighter by herexistence. We will miss her. But she' has well earned he rest to which she has been called--the home of thegolden streets. She is entitled to all the honors of that home. In he death of Grandma Wicks it is unnessary to say,"Peace to her ashes." We know that her ashes are at peace. She was at peace with everything earthly, and peacein a very large measure is surely heaveny reward.
To the surviving relatives it is only necessary to call attention to the pure and great love of the departed to affordthem every consolation. It is hard to console and comfort in such cases as that of Grandma Wicks, where allseems for the best. Her work was finished on earth, and she has only been called home to that rest and everlastingjoy which she so richly deserves.LATER.Due to the fact that a number of the relatives have been unable to arrive here in time, the funeral of GrandmaWicks which was to have been held this afteroon, has been postponed until tomorrow (Friday) afternoon at thesame place and time.
