His oath at enlistment said his service was to be "from 20 Sep1915 until the end of the war". He was 5ft 9 1/4 ins, 9 stone 4 1/2 lbs, chest 37 ins, eyes blue, hair brown, C.of E.A Casualty Form- Active Service for Gunner William MARCOMBE, Service No. 20832 of the Australian 12 Army Brigade included the following:13-05-16 Sick in ship's hospital10-07-16 Disembarked Devonport11-11-16 Transferred to No 1 Command Depot, Larkhill29.12.16 Admitted to 1st A.D.Hospital, Bulford for 70 days "Adm V.D.". MARCOMBE was killed by enemy shell fire on the night 236.1918. He was one of a forward observation party acting in liaison with aminor operation by the 1st Austrlian division near MERRIS.He was killed instantaneously and was buried by an Infantry Chaplain in rear of a trench about half between STRAZ?EA?LEand METERAN. The approximate location may be found by reference to HOOGENACKER FARM on the map of the area. The grave is about ?8?00 yards west of this place.The battery afterwards placed a substantial cross, clearly marked, on the Grave"Fanny MARCOMBE signed that she had received on 26 March 1919, her son's effects; on January 3rd 1922 three copies of a photograph of the grave; on 20 Apr 1922 "one Memorial Scroll and King's Message"; on November 30, 1922 a Memorial Plaque; and on 23 March 1923 a Victory Medal for Gnr W.H.MARCOMBE. The photos referred to were probably of the the reburial grave in Meteren Mil.Cem. plot 4, row A, grave 552 as the decision for reburial had been taken by 14 January 1920. The Cemetery is 10 1/2 miles S.W. of Ypres.William MARCOMBE's will, dated 8th January, 1918, left his whole estate to his mother Fanny MARCOMBE.
