OCCUPATIONS:
BEF 1851-AFT 1851: Labourer in Budock, CON.
BEF 1860-BEF 1864: Innkeeper for Wodehouse Arms in Killigrew Street.Occupation Note: The 2001 Telephone Directory shows a `Wodehouse Arms' towards the lower end of Killigrew Road. The `Foresters Arms' was also in Killigrew Street but the exact location is not known. An 1888 map shows that the old Market Place was nearby. Killigrew Road runs down almost to the sea front where there is a left turn into the High Street and a right turn into Market Street. William Henry BRAY and his large family were living in No.1 Market Street at the time of the 1881 census. There is no inn at No 1 today so William may not have lived in the `Victory Inn, where he was probably still landlord in 1881. Market Street continues south eastwards parallel to the shore, and changes into the equally short Church Street after about 300 yards. The Phone Directory shows a `Victory Inn' in Church Street but it is unclear whether this Inn occupies the same site as the `Victory Inn' of which William Henry BRAY was landlord.
BEF 1864-AFT 1878: Innkeeper for Victory InnOccupation Note: William Henry was an innkeeper in the 1881 census but we cannot be certain that he was still at the Victory Inn..
27Feb1882-24Aug1896: Innkeeper for Foresters Arms in Killigrew St., Falmouth.
GENERAL NOTE:
See large sheet of BRAY information from David SYKES 1990.In 1989 D.M.T.MORCOM made notes from a collection of Newspaper References to Cornish Inns which had been compiled by Mr DOUCH of the Royal Institute of Cornwall [Ref. TRI251 72205]. David's notes below are the best record we have of the periods for which William Henry was the innkeeper at different Falmouth inns. However, we cannot be certain, from the following, that William was not, at a particular time, the licensee of more than one establishment. His brother Samuel, a carter, was living in 1881 at Berkeley Vale, which is mentioned below. It is not know whether the Thomas BRAY in the first two references was related to William and Samuel. Family Code: St ISSEYjohn GWENNAPrichard
BIRTH:
27May1860 in Falmouth CON. Born as William Henry BRAY at 424? Killigrew Street, he used his mother's maiden name throughout his life in Australia. Census 1861: 10 mths, s; 1871: 10 scholar. Copy of birth certificate received from Christine LUXFORD. Birth registered on 20 June 1860
DEATH:
06Feb1930 in District Hospital, Bathurst NSW AUS. NSW Deaths Reg.No. 1930/2198. Son of William & Agnes. Ill for 6 days before he died of Pyelonephritis and Hypertrophy of Prostate.Age at death: 69
BURIAL:

EMIGRATION:
ABT 1882 in "HMS Espiegle" Arrived in Sydney, NSW 15Jan1883Immigration Note: Jumped ship, probably in Sidney, and changed his name to William Bray MORCOM. His death certificate in 1930 said that he had been 47 years in NSW i.e. since c.1883. He is also said to have been a member of Bathurst Methodist choir after 1883

BEF 1903-AFT 1903: Creek Street,Macquarie,Bathurst,NSW AUS
-06Feb1930: 128,Lambert Street,Bathurst,NSW AUS
OCCUPATIONS:
03Apr1881 Seaman for HMS "Vengence" in Stoke Damerel.Occupation Note: In this entry he was at the "Sailor Rest and Institute", Stoke Damerel. There were 25 sailors lodging at the Sailor Rest, four being listed as belonging to the HMS "Indus", and nine to HMS "Vengeance". "James W MARCONI" is listed next to "William H BRAY". They are both listed as belonging to HMS Vengence, and they were the only sailors in the Sailor Rest or on board the "Indus" who were listed as born in Falmouth.Should James W MARCONI or MORCOM have been listed as belonging to the "Indus" or was the Sailor Rest a stage in his transfer from HMS "Indus" to the HMS "Vengence"?In 1861 James Williams MORCOM was living in Killigrew St., Falmouth and his father Digory was, probably, previously married to Kezia BRAY. His mother Jane nee TOY was living in Killigrew St. in 1881. William Henry BRAY Jnr was also resident in Killigrew Street at the time of the 1861 and 1871 censuses, and his father returned to Killigrew St in 1882. However we have, as yet, been unable to find any family connection between William Henry BRAY and Kezia BRAY, nor between Digory MORCOM and Agnes Perry MORCOM, the mother of William Henry BRAY..
-1883: Seaman/Carpenter for "HMS Espiegle"Occupation Note: He deserted from the Royal Navy ship.
1885-1930: Carpenter in Bathurst, AUS.Occupation Note: Made beautiful furniture..
GENERAL NOTES:
His sister Lilian and half sister Olive signed a paper in 1925 confirming that William Henry BRAY and William Bray MORCOM were the same person. This document has the letter heading of the Independent Order of Oddfellows, Penryn, Cornwall. To add to the confusion his death certificate states (incorrectly) that his father was William MORCOM and his mother Agnes PERRY.He is thought to have jumped ship with "his brother Edward" according to Christine LUXFORD (who stresses that no proof has been found for this story). The Australian family do not know what became of this brother - if he ever existed. It was not Edwin BRAY, William's brother. Could it have been a MORCOM cousin?
In "Ship Deserters" 1852-1900 written by Jim MELTON (Library of Australian History) quotes on page 403 from the Police Gazette p.26 a notice dated 17 Jan 1883:William H BRAY: From HMS "Espiegle", Sydney, on the 15 Jan 1883. Carpenter, Crew, born in Cornwall, 24 years of age, 5'5" high, fair complexion, dark-brown hair, blue eyes. £3 if apprehended within 2 years. Plus £5 NSW
