BEF Jan 1884 Chief Engineer for Sheerness Naval DockyardOccupation Note: Hampshire Telegraph and Sussex Chronicle etc (Portsmouth, England), Saturday, March 15, 1884; Issue 5361: "These changes are due to the retirement of Mr Alfred Morcom who has left the service to join the firm of Bellis and Co, engineers, Birmingham. Mr Morcom was one of the few naval engineers who succeded in winning a first-class certificate at College, and was some years attached to the Steam Department at Portsmouth, where he was one of the instructors in marine engineering to the engineer students".
Mar 1884-1905: Partner and later Chairman of Bellis & Morcom for Bellis and Morcom, manufacturer of steam engines in Ledsam Street, Birmingham.Occupation Note: While working at Portsmouth and Sheerness, Alfred had become interested in the work of Mr G.E.BELLIS, the founder of the well known marine engineering firm at Ledsam Street, Birmingham. In 1884 Alfred left Sheerness and went into partnership with Mr G E BELLISS (of G.E.BELLISS & Co.) and the name of the firm was changed to BELLISS & MORCOM. Mr BELLIS had been largely engaged in the construction of steam pinnaces and launches for the Navy, but under the supervision of Alfred MORCOM the machinery for torpedoes as well as for torpedo boats and torpedo boat destroyers was added. In 1890 practically a new industry was commenced, consisting of the manufacture of high speed engines for electric generating purposes. In 1893 the firm was converted into a private company, Mr BELLIS becoming the Chairman and Mr MORCOM the Managing Director. When the Chairman retired in 1904, Alfred succeeded him. His obituary states "The success of the firm has been due to a gradually built up reputation for thoughtful and able design and perfect workmanship, and the credit for this achievement has been largely the result of the inventive energy and ability shown by Mr MORCOM in the management of the works and in the training of the staff."As the engineer responsible, Alfred MORCOM attended a trial of the first torpedo catcher vessel off Portsmouth in Febraury 1885.In December 1887 Bellis & Morcom won the contract for triple expansion engines for HMS Sarpshooter - the lightest engines of the same power in existence..
