GENERAL NOTE:
It seems likely that the Thomas MORCOM(BE) who sank shafts at Newland, Exford and at Balewater, Simonsbath in 1836, for John KNIGHT of Exmoor, in search of limerock* was probably the Thomas MORCOM, miner, living at Combe Martin with his wifeElizabeth in June 1820 when their first son Samuel was baptised, and remained there until his death in 1855. He was still listed as a miner when a second son, Thomas, was baptised in March 1823, but by the time a daughter Mary Ann Kidwell MORCOMwas baptised in April 1827, he was described as an innkeeper of the Quay, Combe Martin, though no doubt still mining when work was available.*John KNIGHT of Exmoor's labour accounts 1836. Knight Manuscripts, Worcester Registry Office. He was probably the Thomas MORCOM or MORCUM at New Inn, Combe Martin in the 1826, 1827 and 1828 Victuallers Recognizances granted by the Quarter Sessions [Series 63 in Devon Records Office].

In my transcript of the 1870 Morris Co. NJ Census the family number was 482, and individual numbers were Thomas 575, Mary A 576, and Emma 577. I am not certain if these numbers are taken from the original transcript.

GENERAL NOTE:
Nancy HEYDT email 14.7.97:In 1872 and 1873 records Thomas was member No.18 of the Miners and Mechanics Benevolent Society of Port Oram, NJ. In 1874 and 1875 he moved up to No. 17, someone having died or moved away. There were about 355 members in 1872, the first year when members could join. The "Development of the Methodist Church of Port Oram" records a Thomas Morcom as elected steward on 18 May 1870.William J Curnow in "The Miners & Mechanics of Port Oram, New Jersey" (Cornwall FHS Journal No.84, June 1997, pp 2-5 includes the following points:Iron and zinc mining concentrated in Highlands of Morris and Sussex counties, only c.35 mls from New York. Large scale development, especially for iron ore, in western parts of Morris Co. by mid 1850's. the two Cornish Oram brothers built up their business, centred on Port Oram (now Wharton), nr.Dover, from c.1850 and especially after the end of the Civil War in 1865. It was a port on the Morris Canal and railway links were also soon developed. As the mines at Port Oram were worked to greater depths, Cornish miners and engineers were brought in to deal with drainage problems. The Benevolent Society was formed in about June 1869. About 75% of the 1872-73 members disappeared from the books during the 1873-1880 depression - many of them being expelled for non-payment of the annual fee of c.$12 due to low earnings or unemployment.

There is additional evidence that the Thomas in Montana and in Sunny Corner, Gwennap was the same. In 1916 his brother George's family in NZ had an address list which included an entry "Mrs, Thos, & John Morcom, East Center Street, Centerville, Butte, Montana".NB: LINK BETWEEN 1881 IGI MARRIAGE IN MISSOURI AND 1910 MONTANA CENSUS NEEDS FURTHER PROOF. There is also a possibility that this Thomas, not Thomas (05539), was previously married to Mary A. BLEWITT in Redruth in Q3 1876. However the 1881 UK Census (taken on 3rd April) shows a Thomas still married to a Mary A. with no children.
