Summary by Neville MARSH:"Alice was said to be one of nine (sic) children of Alice Morcom of Cunnamulla.Her mother said she was of a cheerful disposition and she had expected her togo to Toowoomba to see a friend but instead went to see a Wilfred George Cookwho, reading between the lines, was a backstreet abortionist. Alice was founddead following an "illegal operation": Cook had called an ambulance but thiswas to no avail. The pathologist's very brief report suggests "abortion?" Atthe trial, Cook pleaded not guilty to murder but was found guilty nonethelessand sentenced to life imprisonment with hard labour. He was 70 at the time ofhis imprisonment and the local paper noted that "one of the greatest menacesthe community had known for years" had been put away."Alice had lost her first child only nine months previously
