Residence Notes:
The sons of Annie, possible partner of James MORCOM were born in 1863 and 1866. According to an article by James in the Adelaide register of 20 Oct 1917 he was living with his parents from 1860 to 1867 at the west end of Hindley Street.
Other newspaper accounts that James must have been frequently working outside Adelaide during this period. He was reported as being in the city in May 1872 and again competing in a rifle shooting match in Oct 1963.

As representative of a circus or other show, he had to have a good presence and was usually more educated than most circus folk. His work as an Advance Agent included going round the next town pasting up bills for the show. One night he posted a bill on the back of a drunk who, in his meandering around the town, sold out Grace Egerton's next performance..
1867-ABT 1894: Leaser of the Temperance Hotel and Labour Market in Adelaide.Occupation Note: Took over the lease of the Temperance Hotel when his father Samuel became bankrupt. It is unknown when he gave up his work as an advance agent for circuses. Maybe Samuel continued to be the active manager as he continued to live in the Hotel was still active in running the Labour Market c.1867-1888. Ironically, the Temperance Hotel was sold in the mid 1890s to the West End Brewery next door in Hindley Street. The hotel was demolished in 1894..

"EXPERIENCES IN SOUTH AUSTRALIA Chronicles of Long AgoREEDY CREEK COPPER MINEBorn at Tin Croft, near Pool, in the parish of Illogan, Cornwall, I arrived at Port Adelaide when four years of age in a large sailing vessel. My father was elected in Cornwall as mining captain to the Reedy Creek copper mines near Palmer, so we proceeded there, and remained for about five years. [James next describes the terrible howling of wild dogs at night, being covered with leeches while swimming, and the children in the church schoolroom being alarmed by seeing a ribbon snake in the room.] After the mine was closed down, we retuned to Adelaide, and resided in a house in Lower North Adelaide.THE TEMPERANCE HOTELIt was about this time that the gold rush occurred at Forest Creek, Victoria, where my father proceeded without delay. After a time, he returned to Adelaide, and started in business as proprietor of the Temperance Hotel in Hindley Street West, and for years accommodated large numbers of emigrants at the expense of the Government. Later I went to Martin's School to receive my education. At 17 I joined the Volunteer Force, and having a liking for the rifle, was not long in becoming an efficient rifle shot, and won numerous prizes. During that time I went to night school, the teacher being the late Mr Lewdhen, and it was in his backyard that I first practiced gymnastics on the horizontal bar and single trapeze, and after the lapse of a couple of years made my debut in the Old Exhibition Building on the flying trapeze. After that I obtained an engagement at the Napier Theatre, Ballarat, Victoria.THE VICTORIA THEATRE[James mentioned that a mesmerist failed to hypnotise him at the Victoria Theatre . Prof Nash, a different mesmirist, with whom James later travelled, confimed that he could not usually hypnotise a resistant subject]TOM THUMB[James describes travelling with Tom Thumb to Wentworth where they were both due to perform. Their coach and two horses could not cross a flooded Gol Gol Creek. While making a seveteen mile diversion they found a drowned man floating in about two feet of water. They then lost their way and had to join a camp which had been set up by two other travellers, who were pleased to see Tom Thumb and were also entertained by James's fiddle playing. They had missed the first night of their engagement but had a crowded house the following night]EXPERIENCES AS ADVANCE AGENTI was never as puzzled when at Port Augusta, the sun appeared to me to rise in the west and set in the east. On various occasions I travelled as advance agent for Rayner's Panorama of the American War, for Mr and Mrs George Case (Grace Egerton), the Carandinia Woodyear's Circus, the Fakir of Oolu, Dr Silvester, and Burton's Circus.........................ON THE BOARDSIn connection with the Fakir of Oolu's Shadow Pantomine at the Theatre Royal, Hindley Street, I took the part of Harlequin, and one evening took my bow before the footlights, and addressed the audience thus:- `Ladies and Gentlemen - a telegraph has just been received at the back, stating there are several persons present who are desirous of viewing the moon through a glass tumbler; how true it is I cannot say, but, however there will be an interval of ten minutes'. This announcement caused much laughter.......................
A VERSATILE CAREERI sold Kubelik an old Amati violin. He was staying at the South Australian Hotel when I introduced to him an accompaniment to a step change with fingers only on the instrument. He was highly delighted, and danced all over the room. He took the Amati to England with him. In the early days in many country towns. posters were seldom heard of, so advance theatrical agents were obliged to stick their own bills. I well remember in Narracoo?? posting bills until midnight on a Saturday, when I met a man dead drunk, so I quietly posted a bill on his back, with the following words in print `Dont' fail to see Grace Egerton in her sketches of odd people'. This proved a capital and appropriate advertisement, as the drunk was seen weaving his way through the streets on the Sunday morning with the bill hanging on tight. On the following evening the hall was crowded, many persons not being able to gain admittance".

Mr Morcom had a varied fund of anecdoteand was a pleasant companion, making many friends. He had been living in retirement for some time. He was 73 years of age."
Peter MORCOM's marriage report says he named James MORCOM as his father. However it is quite possible that Peter did not know who his father was and "borrowed" his brother's name to keep up appearances- but his brother could have been named James after his father!? However, James himself, when he married, described himself as the "adopted son of George DUNN, farmer, and Eliza DISHER"I speculate that this James might have been the partner of Annie MORCOM (16494) and father of her sons James & Peter. There are innumerable references to James MORCOM in the Australian newspapers but, unfortunately, few of them give exact dates. As far as I can work out, the sequence of events is as follows:1862 James had joined West Adelaide Rifles at the age of 17. A meeting of the Rifles in 1863 mentions that members were required to attend only three drills a week. In the Adelaide Register of 20 Oct 1917, James relates that he was living with his parents in Hindley Street from 1860 to 1867, though it seems that he may have been increasingly out of Adelaide towards the end of this periodc. 1864 James jnr was born - this date is based on an average of calculations based on several later records. James snr would have been about 19.By 1865 James snr. was a flying trapeze performer appearing professionally in both Adelaide and Ballaratc. 1866 Peter born1866 The West Adelaide Rifles are disbanded and James and John travel in Victoria, NSW and Tasmania, (CHECK Source for this)Later in 1866 James becomes as Advance Agent for circuses and other shows, work which took him out of Adelaide for an unknown period.In 1867 James officially took over the lease of the Temperance Hotel from Samuel who had become disbarred due to insolvency. However, Samuel still lived in the hotel for some years and continued to run the Labour Exchange, and possibly the hotel. Therefore he might have been effectively the manager until 1888, while James, possibly, continued to travel as an Advance Agents for some years. Note that James stated that he ceased to live in Hindley Street in 1867.1872 James and Peter admitted to the Destitute Asylum, and in 1873 boarded out to families15 August 1874 Annie died11 November 1877 James MORCOM c. 32 marries Martha ROBERTSThere is nothing in this record to conflict with the theory that this James MORCOM was the partner of Annie MORCOM, but more positive evidence is needed to prove that he is the James MORCOM named by Peter as his father. One potential problem is that we have no evidence that "Sad Annie" was even in Adelaide between 1860 and 1872. She could have just arrived from elsewhere in Australia, or been, like many of the Asylum's residents, an unemployed recent immigrant from England. Unfortunately, the West Adelaide electoral roll of 1862 only lists males.While all this speculation is entirely unproven it is included here to encourage further investigation.

In his 6 May 1904 application for a land grant near Long Lake in Saskatchewan, James listed himself as miner, English from Australia, with a family of five including himself. He paid ten dollars for the grant of 160 acres.
Three years later, having met certain conditions such as improving the land and living on it, he was eligible to receive "Patent" on the land which meant he owned it. In his Sworn Statement for the Patent July 15, 1907, James said he was 42, farmer.
To other questions required for the Sworn Patent he stated that he was a British Subject "by birth and always". He had occupied his house on 4 June 1904 & by July 1907 was cultivating 44 acres. He valued the 26x14 house at $200 & a 26x49 stable at $50
In 1916 James had a boarder Elsie WITHERS, 23, single, English, Anglican, school teacher

In the Destitute Asylum Registers James is described as "Age 9 C of E. Native born. Living Adelaide. Circumstances: illegitimate child of Annie MORCOM who has surrendered her two children to the care of the board. [Source GRG 28/5/1 271 Date: 29.8.1872]. According to the Register of Admissions to the Industrial Boys Reformatory and Girls Reformatory 1863-1882 [GRG 28/9 and 10], James MORCOM, age 9, [Destitute Asylum entry 73] was admitted to the Industrial Boys Reformatory on 29 August 1872. It was noted that he was C of E.GRG 27/5 Ledgers of Children Boarded Out (Vol 1 Folio 83) records that James, age 10, illegitimate, was on 30 August 1873 [elsewhere "left June 6 1873"] placed with W. DUNN, farmer, Wesleyan, "Mt Charles in Woodside"[elsewhere "Charleston" ], referee Rev. Grey JENKIN. William H DUNN (1897-1879), the son of Charles DUNN and Thomasin nee HOOPER, tenant farmers in Bondleigh, Devon, and headed a well known family in Charleston near near Woodside in South Australia. (There was a large MORCOM family farming within eight miles.) The Ledger record then goes on to say: "Apprenticed, Adopted or Licensed to Service and term - Adopted 6 years. " followed by a note "Overage June 7/79. Written to and informed that he is out of Board's control July 19/79. This boy by letter 30/79 informed us that he intends to remain with Mr Dunn at wages". By 1879 both william DUNN and his wifeElizabeth nee HERD had died. So the Mr DUNN referred to is presumably one of his sons. His marriage certificate states that James was adopted by George DUNN [18449] 1844-1906 and his wife Eliza Jane nee DISHER 1852-1924 who had married in Charleston on 11 May 1870. They had nine children between c.1871 and 1886. The status of James within the DUNN family is described as "adopted" or "placed" in different documents and it is uncertain whether these terms were ever legally differentiated.Eliza Jane dau. of James Wardlaw DISHER, was born on 26 Aug. 1852 in the next town Woodside, which was also the birth place of Ellen CARTER, the wife of James. George [1844-1906], a member of a prosperous family, was apparently greatly respected throughout the district and had a wide circle of friends. He always took a keen interest in politics and was at one time a member of the Onkaparinga District Council and one of the promoters and a member of the first board of directors of the Onkaparinga Butter Factory. Eliza died 8th May 1924 in CharletonThe State Library of SA holds a copy of a small publication "The DUNN Family of Charleston 1843-1976 - The History of Charles and Mary, William and Elizabeth DUNN and Descendants1796-1976" by Laurie TUCKER and Lucy ROSSITER.
In Saskatchewan James was one of the first trustees of Edenkillie School. When it opened on September 1st 1908 among the five pupils were Myrtle and Clyde.
