His commanding officer Wing Commander R H MORAN wrote in his report."SPECIAL REMARKS: An officer of fine physique & pleasnat manner. He has completely mastered all aspects of his work as a Hudson captain and as leader of "B" flight. Loyal, conscientious & possessing common sense to a marked degree, this officer is also outstanding in his ....fulnessGENERAL REMARKS: This officer's tenacity and courage have become almost a byword in the squadron. Eager to participate in the most hazardous tasks he is an inspriration to his flight. An exceptional officer"He is included on a Roll of Honour Circular for the 1939-45 War. The award of the DFC is recorded in a 19 August 1943 honours and awards list. In 1943 he was posted as a Flight Lieutenant [promoted 1 Apr 1943] to the RAAF 1 Operational Training Unit, and in August of the same year was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross. Alma, his wife, and two children, Michael and Suelyn, went over to Victoria from West Australia to join him as there were married quarters available. Soon afterwards, in October, Keith was killed at Sale on a training flight. The DFC was presented to Alma after Keith's death. One of several Australian War Museum entries re. Frank Keith MORCOM refers to a RAAF Biographical file.
Occupation Note: Arnold MORCOMBE writes that "Early in 1943 he was transferred back to Sale in Australia. Alma, his wife, and two children, Michael and Suelyn, went over to Victoria from West Australia to join him as there were married quarters available. Soon afterwards, in October, Keith was killed at Sale on a training flight." He was working as a flight instructor. The following is the Citation for the award on 19 Aug 1943 of the Distinguished Flying Cross to Frank Keith MORCOMBE:Flight Lieutenant MORCOMBE was posted to No.2 G.R./B. squadron on the 23rd July, 1942, and since that date had completed many hours of operational flying against the enemy including many day and night strikes, reconnaissances, offensive and seaward patrols. As commander of "S" Flight his constant example of determination, tirelessness and courage and his efficiency as a leader have had a tremendous influence on the other personnel of the squadron. On the 4th December, 1942, Flight Lieutenant MORCOMBE was the leader of a formation of three Hudsons, on an offensive patrol in search of enemy shipping along Watar Strait north of Timor. Despite persistent and close attacks by enemy fighters which commenced at the beginning of the Strait, he continued on down past the enemy fighter base at Dilli and completed his mission. One aircraft was damaged in the hydraulic system which caused the under-carriage to drop and retarded its speed. By skilful leadership of the formation and the use of meagre cloud cover he brought the formation back along the Strait and home to its base without further mishap. The courage and devotion to duty displayed in this episode is typical of the fighting qualities of this officer.Flight Lieutenant MORCOMBE has continually volunteered to participate in the more dangerous sorties as indicated by the high proportion of strikes in the sorties in which he has participated. On one occasion he scored direct hits on a Japanes destroyer, disabling it.Flight Lieuteant MORCOMBE has proved himself to be a capable, enthusiastic and courageous leader whose devotion to duty has been in accordance with the highest traditions of the Service.PRIVATE ADDRESS: Pingelly, WEST AUSTRALIA.There are further details of Frank Keith's RAAF career in his 31 page service report on the Austrlian National Archives web site.
