BEF 1939-ABT 1942: Galway East (later Netherby),AUS

OCCUPATIONS:
1916 Junior Technican in Training, Telephony for Post Office in Adelaide.Occupation Note: Because his family could not afford to keep him at school Ross only stayed two years in Adelaide High. Instead he took the examination for a job in the Telephone Service of the Commonwealth government . There was a shortage of attractive jobs in South Australia which had very little industry, but Public Service offered opportunities in engineering which he wanted to pursue. His first job in the Adelaide Post Office was to repair damaged cods in switchboards.. At 16 he was doing a similar job in the Common Battery Exchange. finding this did not give him enough scope he transferred into the Telegraph Service at 17 or 18.
ABT 1918-1926: Technician, Telegraphy for Post OfficeOccupation Note: This job gave him the opportunity to learn many new skills in servicing delicate instruments which were used for high speed transference of messages. The only drawback was that he did not enjoy the shift work.. He heard important news (e.g. the Tokyo earthquake whgggggich killed a hundred thousand) before it appeared in the papers. By 21 he was a Junior Mechanic,,.
1926-1930: Senior Technician, Telegraphy for Post Office in Darwin.Occupation Note: By 1926 there was a cable from Adelaide to Darwin and from there on to London via Bombay - the only telegraph link that Austrlia had to the rest of the world. Radio was, at that ime, only for local transmission. To get to Darwin the couple travelled to Melbourne , then Sydney, by rail, and then took a boat to Darwin. The whole journey took a fortnight. The Post Office provided a comfortable home in Darwin and nost of their groceries etc were delivered to the house. They had a servant. There was quite an active social life in Darwin.Ross worked maintaining the land cable as far south of Darwin as Mataranka, a distance of 420 kms, At the same time, he repaired railway phones. Before his move to Darwin he was a senior technician. The family left Darwin about four months before Ross, because Phyllis was unwell and it was best to avoid the hot season in the Northern Territory.
Supervising Technican Grades 1 to 3 for Post OfficeOccupation Note: Between leaving Darwin in 1930 to his retirement in 1965, Ross rose from Supervising Technician Grade 1 to 5. He could not become an engineer without a degree..
GENERAL NOTES:
Ross Bishop MORCOM is listed by the Department of Veterans Affairs among 8590 civilians in their "Atomic Participants Nominal Roll"
Ross on 6 Sept 1985 was interviewed by Beth M ROBERTSON as part of the "S.A. Speaks: an Oral History of Life in South Australia before 1930". The 3 hr interview is available on three tapes or a 50 page transcript from the Mortlake Library [OH 1/11]. She recorded that Ross "has something of a stammer but speaks very clearly" https://www.awm.gov.au/images/collection/pdf/S00797_TRAN.pdfThe following are some miscellaneous notes from that interview:Ross remembers having a very large extended family in the district around him when he wa a child with mucb visiting of aunts, uncles, cousins and inlaws. He lived than in a seven room house built by his father which was still being completed up to c. 1910. It had no running water in the house, only a tap, connected to the mains, at the back. They had a stable for horses and ponies and carriage house. Later tehey had a cow. There always had up to ten wild curlews, which they fed, in the yard. Friends gave them a name plate "The Curlews" for the house. There were always cats around - they were afraid of the curlews. They grew oranges, lemons, peaches and grapes. The children used a billy goat cart when they went swimming in the bay together.Ross recognised that the attitude of himself and siblings to aborigines was racist in his young days. Everywhere was regarded as safe for the children to roam and houses were never locked. There was a stockroute past the house with three or four hundred cattle passing at a time.He started at Adelaid Public School at 7 years old. There were forty to fifty boys in a class. Ross thought they were well discipilned at school, partly because they were often from families of up to a dozen children and were therefore used to being disciplined at home.At the age of 14 to 18 (during the first World War) , Ross had military training twice a week. he thougt it a bore and hated it. When the war ended Ross was at a three week training camp.Start at pg 34
