GENERAL NOTE:
NB It is not certain that the Freddie L or Fred N MORCOM of the 1880 census and death record is the same man as the Fred L MORCOM the Mayor of Oakland. They died in the same year and Oakland is near Almeda Co. where the death occurred. Moreover a "Fred N MORCOM is reported as participating in the opening ceremony, on 16 Dec 1931, of the Paramount Theatre, Oakland. The article in Outlook says he became, unwillingly, the 37th Mayor of Oakland, because he wanted to reform the city government and get rid of the the "scallywag" Mayor, an autocrat who ran the city with the help of 15 Commissioners. Morcom campaigned, advocating a City Manager role supported by a more democratic nine member Council. Voters overwhelmingly voted for him and the new council elected him Mayor. [Wikipedia reports that he was the first Oakland mayor to be selcted by his fellow councillors and not by popoular vote.]He found the job onerous and only had a male secretary as staff. He was unsalaried and had to try to give some time to his shop to earn his living. Today's citizens of Oakland are most likely to associate him with the Morcom Rose Garden conceived by him and with its amphitheatre named after him.Fred MORCOM described his experience as Mayor as follows: "In my two years as Mayor, among other things, I have kept 500 engagements, welcomed celebrities galore, opened theatres, addressed every conceivable form of meeting, driven thousands of miles in my own car, and been besieged by job hunters, and given of tireless attention, too often without success. My business took it on the chin and I am now glad to get back to being a private citizen again." He was only paid a monthly stipend of $100 plus $15 per council meeting. he belived that the mayor should be directly eelected by the voters. He returned to the city council as councillor-at-large from 1941 to 1953.

The following comes from a Queensland Baptist web site c. 2004/2005:Geoff Morcom served in Africa for 30 years, work-ing with groups such as the Africa Evangelical Fellowship, the South African Baptist Missionary Society and the Baptist Union of Southern Africa. Upon his return to Australia in 1992 he became Field Minister for ABMS (now Global interAction). He served in this role for three years before retiring in 1995. He became President of Queensland Baptists in 1997/98 and later served in an interim or part time capacity at a number of pastorates.He was involved in the Salisbury Baptist Church up until the time of his death and also edited the Queensland Baptist Retirees newsletter. He died in the early hours of 19 November.
