RESIDENCE:

Mary Searle MORCOM (May)(19651)
Family Code: GWENNAPjohn2
BIRTH:
ABT 1872 in Wellington NZ. Birth date from death age 88 in 1960. No record of birth found but unless she was the twin sister of Annie Cawley she was probably born 1871 or earlier. "Illegitimate" partly obliterated on May's marriage certificate following more recent NZ law.Recollections in family letters name her birth place as Wellington NZ. Laurence Alan WEBSTER's birth certificate also says his mother Mary Searle MORCOM was born in Wellington
DEATH:
1960 in Blenheim NZ. NZ BMD ref 1506
RESIDENCES:
ABT 1872 Whangagokaka bay, Port Underwood,Marlborough County NZ
ABT 1873 Starborough Station, Seddon, Awatere Valley,Marlborough NZ
-1896: Blenheim,Marlborough NZ
1910-ABT 1953: Kia Ora Farm,Seddon,Marlborough NZ
Residence Note:
In 1896 May and her daughter Hilda were living in Blenheim separately from her husband who was probably still employed on a farm nr Seddon
OCCUPATION:
1910-1960: Farmer in Kia Ora farm, Seddon, Marlborough.Occupation Note: Widowed at the age of 44, May brought up six well educated children and, together with an unmarried daughter, Mabel, and a manager, farmed the property "Kia Ora" now known as "Sherborne" at Seddon..
GENERAL NOTE:
Elaine DEWHIRST wrote "From family letters we are led to believe that May's mother Anne (Annie) S MORCOM died early in her childhood and she (May) was adopted by an aunt and uncle". It is unlikely that Henry SPENCER was related to May MORCOM, so this belief probably arose from the SPENCERs being known as aunt and uncle by May's children. it is now known that Anne Searle MORCOM did not die until 1916 in NSWMarlborough Express, Saturday January 25th, 1873:"Port of Wairau (Blenheim)Entered InwardsJan 25 Gem from Wellington with Mrs MORCOM and child, Mrs Staveley, Mr F Day, and personal baggage."The STAVELEYs were married on 27 Dec 1872 in Wellington, probably because the journey was easier than to Blenheim. It is not known whether they stayed in Wellington for a month or returned in late January to collect May and her mother. The "Gem", a ten ton ketch, was jointly owned by Robert George STAVELEY (Mrs STAVELEY was probably his newly married wife Elizabeth) and Henry Joseph SPENCER who adopted Mary Searle. So it is very likely that the owners crewed the small vessel which was mainly used for carrying freight between South Island ports. When the "Gem" was later wrecked it had a crew of two [cf. details of Robert George STAVELEY]. The SPENCERS, who had married Q1 1864 in Newington, London,UK were still childless in 1873. They were the first settlers at Whangakoka Bay, Port Underwood. The most likely reason for their fostering May was that they were still childless after eight years of marriage. It is also possible that they were short of money and an agency in Wellington initially paid them to look after May. This was a common practice at that time.Elaine DEWHIRST wrote:The SPENCERs, who adopted May, moved to take up a position as a 'married couple' on a farm in the Awatere Valley. May's husband Albert was a 'station hand' on Richmond Brook, a large sheep station which is still in the hands of the original family. It is situated close to where Albert & May eventually purchased land for their farm "Kia Ora".
