Immigration Note: One source mentions that a number of Cornish men were working in mines near Tocopilla in the 1880s

OCCUPATION:
BEF 1891-AFT 1901: Tin Miner in St Day, Gwennap Parish.
GENERAL NOTE:
The following information comes from Sharron P SCHWARZ's website "The Cornish in Latin America": David A and Ann ANNEAR arrived in Chile from Gwennap in 1866. William John and Elizabeth were born in Chile, and the family returned to Gwennap Parish in 1870. Sharron's source may be the couple's marriage date and the Gwennap census returns. The 1901 Census says that John ANNEAR was born in " Capicoa, America" - probably a mispelling of Copiapa or Copiapo a mining settlement in Atacama province to which a number of Cornish miners went to work. As SCHWARZ's William John and the 1901 Census John were both born in 1866 in Chile, it is likely that they are identical. He appears to have started life as William John [unless there was an error in 1871 census which also misled SCHWARZ], used mainly John between c. 1881 and 1901, but his death is recorded as Philip John, the name by which he is remembered by his descendants and in his obituary. There is no trace of a Philip John in the English census records.
