John ROWE (Source 255) writes that "A Tywardreath man, John WICKS, discovered the Chaplin iron deposits at Iron Mountain, and earned the title of `Grand Old Man' of that town, for he was eighty nine years old when he died in 1908, thirty years after his great discovery; his mining days had begun as far back as 1831, some twenty years before he first set foot in Michigan." ROWE's source was A.L.Sawyer "A History of the Northern Peninsula of Michigan, Chicago 1911, p.1029.
