Residence Notes:
In 1851 Ann was a lodger in the household of James EASTERBROOK. As William's mother was an EASTERBROOK, this makes it likely - though not certain - that she was the Ann CHURCHWORD or CHURCHWARD who married William.
The LDS 1851 British Census CD has misleading entries of "Address: xxxx St., Totnes. Census Place: Buckfastleigh Totnes". Buckfastleigh was a sub-district of Totnes. Two of the streets named were in Buckfastleigh and it is assumed the other 2 also were.
OCCUPATION:
-1851: Serge WeaverOccupation Note: The 1851 Census contains 13 CHURCHWARD households in Buckfastleigh most of them being engaged in the woollen industry, so it is not possible to identify Ann's parents from the census alone. [The Blue Guide, 1972 ed, describes Buckfastleigh as "a small market town (2700), once famous for woollens"].
GENERAL NOTE:
It is most likely that the Ann CHURCHWARD, lodging with James EASTERBROOK in Chapel Street, Buckfastleigh, in the 1851 census, is the one who married William MORCOMBE. She was a serge weaver, 21, unmarried, and born in Buckfastleigh.A Susan CHURCHWARD was married in Totnes Registration District in Q2 1852. The Registration No. for the marriage is 5b-326, the next number (i.e. next page) to Ann's number 5b-327. It could be that these were two sisters marrying on the same day. There were two unmarried Susans (both born in Buckfastleigh) who were living with their fathers in Jordan St, Buckfastleigh in the 1851 census. Susan, age 22, serge weaver, daughter of James CHURCHWARD, age 47, mason, and Margaret CHURCHWARD, age 58, washer woman [there was an Easterbrook family living near this CHURCHYARD family]; and a Susan age 20, wool sorter, daughter of Samuel CHURCHWARD, age 57, inn keeper of the Royal Oak, who was a widower. These are also possible parents (all born in Buckfastleigh) for Ann, which would be more safely identified by the marriage certificate.JoAnn METHOD reports that William MORCOMBE and Ann CHURCHWORD had eight children, but her obituary refers to nine children, five surviving their mother], 17 grandchildren, and 5 great grandchildren. By her husband William's death, two years later, a sixth great grandchild had been born. The children surviving Ann and William are listed in their obituaries as Thos.Morcombe of Whitby Township; Chas. [or Charley] MORCOMBE of Plymouth, Indiana; Mrs J.BRAVENER, Whitby; Mrs G.CHISWELL, Owen Sound; and Mrs R.B.SNOW, Parkdale, Toronto. William's obituary also mentions "William MORCOMBE of Pickering", but not as surviving his father, as he had died two or three weeks before William. snr.A photograph in JoAnn's possession shows William and Ann. Ann's maiden name "CHURCHWARD" is confirmed by a note on the back of the photograph.Ann's obituary, in the Whitby Gazette and Chronicle, states that "Mrs MORCOMBE was a member of the Methodist Church from her youth, and was a devout Christian woman."
