GENERAL NOTE:
An inquest (Ref 1417) was held into his Eustace Valentine's death, but the Digger Inquest Index does not give a cause of death. However the Barrier Miner (of Broken Hill NSW) reported on 25 Nov 1896 that he had his leg shattered by the explosion of a gun while out shooting in the Yarra Glen where his father owned a homestead. He endured thirst, exposure and loss of blood for 20 hours without losing consciousness, but was not strong enough to survive the subsequent amputation of his leg in Camberwell. He had previously left his bedroom in the homestead locked,which led the overseer of the homestead to incorrectly assume he had slept there overnight. He had taken a collie dog with him which led the overseer to Eustace.Eustace told the overseer that he had trodden on a large tiger snake and, in hitting the snake with the barrel of his gun, both barrels had gone off and wounded him in the upper calf. (These further details from the Advertiser (Adelaide) of 25 Nov 1896). He had been due to meet his father at the homestead the following day.

GENERAL NOTE:
A probable red herrring! A Henry MARKAM (b. 1831 in Edinburgh) married Rebecca QUINN (b.1831 in Balna, Ireland) in 1854 in Geelong. They had two daughters: Margaret b. in 1855, and Sarah who is recorded in Victoria Registration number 1857/6315 as b. in Geelong, daughter of Henry and Rebecca (nee QUINN) MORKHAM. Was MARKAM misrecorded by a registrar who had already recorded MORKHAM events in Geelong? Henry MARKAM's age and birth place does not match Henry MORKHAM's. No family travelled with Henry MORKHAM when he returned to England in March 1856. Although unlikely, there remains the remote possibility of a family relationship between Henry MARKHAM and Rebecca, Margaret and Sarah. He is described as unmarried in the Somerset 1881 census, but this description would not be unlikely if he had, indeed, abandoned his Geelong family.

GENERAL NOTE:
The 1911 census suggest that William and Diana regarded themselves as a couple by about 1897. Could it have been the imminent arrival of Horace that determined their decision to leave Melbourne for England c. 1901 when Emily Sophia was still alive and presumably not divorced from William Kenneth. No divorce record has been found for William and Emily in Victoria.Nor have I found divorce records (or the death of a previous spouse) for Horace's marriages. Did he follow his father's lead in dispensing with divorce proceedings - presumably an easy route before the computerization of records. In his marriage records his father is recorded with three differing forenames. However the law caught up with Horace eventually as he was prosecuted for making false statements on his marriage certificate. He had given false names for his father on three marriage certificates! Was he concealing his previous marriages or his illegitimacy?
