Family Code: DUNSTERthomas
BIRTH:
ABT 1775 in SOM. Census 1841: age 60 [but, in this census, ages of adults were rounded down to the nearest 5], b. in Somerset
CHRISTENED:
10Dec1775 in Dunster SOM. Son of Thomas and Ann MORKHAM
DEATH:
13Apr1845 in Dunster. Age at death: 69
BURIAL:
21Apr1845 in Dunster Churchyard SOM. Thomas was "of Dunster". The inscription to Thomas and his wife Mary, and also his sister Frances (15315), is on the reverse of the stone to his grandparents Thomas (15396) and Ann, and Frances (15440) - probably his aunt.
WILL:
25Jan1844 in Dunster SOM. Freehold house in West Street, Dunster,(then occupied by his sister Mary) & the attached garden was bequeathed to his wife. On wife's death property was to be sold & proceeds divided among his children. House/garden he occupied left to his wife & children
RESIDENCE:
BEF 1841-AFT 1841: Frackford/West Hill,Dunster,SOM
Residence Note:
Census 1851: HO 107 936 4 p.19. Only MORKH... of family name readable. There were several houses listed at Frackford/West Hill
OCCUPATIONS:
BEF 1815-AFT 1815: "Inn Holder" in Dunster.Occupation Note: The baptism entry of his eldest son Thomas describes his father as an "Inn Holder".
BEF 1815-AFT 1829: Tailor in Dunster.Occupation Note: In various baptism records of his children between 1817 and 1829 Thomas is said to be a tailor. In Slater's Commercial Directory of Minehead, Dunster & Carhampton and Neighbourhoods 1858-1859 [transcribed by Phil MUSTOE], Thomas MORKHAM appears as one of six tailors in Dunster. As this Thomas died in 1845, the question arises whether this was a very out of date entry in Slater's or whether there was another Thomas who we have not found in other Dunster records. The marriage record of his daughter Jane in 1851 also described her [late] father as a tailor.According to source 634 this Thomas "was both a tailor and inn keeper at Dunster".
Builder (Carpenter)Occupation Note: Information from death certificate of his son Thomas. There is no indication in other records that he was a carpenter or builder. CHECK in 1851 census of Dunster..
GENERAL NOTE:
The reason that Thomas seemed to be inconsiderate towards his sister Mary, by giving away the West Street house and garden in which she lived in his will, was probably that he knew that she was in ill health and likely to die soon. She died seven months after he wrote his will, and he was also likely to be anxious to ensure that the property passed on to himself and his heirs as his father had intendedIn the tithe apportionment of c.1843 [the year before the will referred to above] a Thomas MORKHAM owned and occupied Plot 135 which was a house and garden totalling 4P in Water Street, Dunster. We assume that it is this Thomas, as his father had died, though it is also possible that it was his son who owned this land. This was much smaller than the adjacent plot (no. 133) in Water Street owned and occupied by Mary.NOTE: It is difficult to sort out the properties owned by this Thomas (15307), his sister Mary (15320) and their father Thomas (15309) from the wills of the two Thomases, the 1841 census, and 1843 tithe apportionments. One problem is the location of Water Street in the will of the elder Thomas and the tithe records. Was the Frackford Bridge/ West Hill of the 1841 census identical with Water Street, the latter being a continuation out of town of West Street. [Checking the tithe maps and 1851 census may help to resolve the situation.]

Melbourne,VIC AUS
OCCUPATIONS:
-1872: Surveyor and Architect in Geelong.
15Apr1872 Brevet Captain for Ist Geelong Volunteer Artillery in Geelong.Occupation Note: On 20 Dec 1872 the Geelong Advertiser reported that Capt T F MARKHAM had been awarded the musketry prize at the artillery muster.John MORKHAM, his great grandson writes: "He served in the volunteer artillery from 1861 through to 1882 (21 years). Retired in the rank of Major; locally of some status and he used it too......Served very efficiently from 1861 to 1872 and achieved the rank of Brevet Captain. Posted inactive reserve when he joined the public service in Melbourne and awaited a local vacancy which never eventuated. At the creation of the Militia in 1882 and when he held the position of acting Secretary of Works, he was 'retired' with the rank of Honorary Major. ".
03Oct1893 Secretary for Public Works in Melbourne.Occupation Note: From Camperdown Chronicle 3 Oct 1893.
-1905: Secretary for Lands in Melbourne.Occupation Note: This was a very influential post in the land-boom days following the gold era..
Manager for Australian cricket team which toured England in 1903Occupation Note: He was a trustee of Melbourne Cricket Ground for several years and regularly welcomed touring teams but, in a search of newspaper records, I have found no reference to a visit to England in 1903. There is, however, a reference in The Register (Adelaide) of 17 Feb 1902 to Mr MORKHAM being "nominal manager for the Australians" on the 1902 tour as he was already planning to visit the UK to consult a specialist about accidental damage to an eye. But on 16 Feb, in the same paper, Major MORKHAM denied he would be Manager.John MORKHAM, his great grandson writes " It is true though that he never 'managed' the Australian Cricket Team. It was a title given him by the MCC as he travelled on his holiday to the UK at the same time as the team and, with letters of support from the Governor and Premier, got invitations to all the highlight social events including presentation to Edward VII.".
