BEF 1881-AFT 1881: Assistant Ship's Steward for Royal Navy in "Cambridge£.Occupation Note: The Leeds Mercury (Leeds, England), Tuesday, June 20, 1882; Issue 13790 reported that an Alfred MORCOMBE, assistant steward, together with the ship's steward and the paymaster , were charged at Devonport with stealing from the ship's stores of HMS "Cambridge". The ring leader, in stealing 16,000 lbs of meat as well as vegetables, appears to have been the steward, Mr Jew, who persuaded Mr MORCOMBE to make false entries in the books. MORCOMBE was charged with amking the false entries and failing to report the embezzlement by his superior. The steward was sentenced to eighteen months hard labour and dismissed the service with disgrace. MORCOMBE defence argued that the steward was known to intimidate his staff, and Alfred also feared that he Mr JEW would stand in the way of a promotion he shortly expected. The court found MORCOMBE "Guilty" but simply sentenced him to be reprimanded..

Occupation Note: Alfred MORCOMBE was initially enlisted into the Royal Artillery in Woolwich on 11 July 1893 when he was 18 yrs 8 months. He was 5 ft 7 1/2 ins, 115 lbs, blue eyes, fair hair. Church of England. he had been born in Battersea. Carpenter by trade. He was enlisted for seven years full-time service followed by five years in the Reserve.heserved at home until 16 Dec 1895. He landed in India 6 Jan 1896; returned home between 15 December 1902 and 8 March 1907; was out in India again until 7 Nov 1914. he also served in the Mediterranean from 20 March 1915 to 16 January 1916. He seems to have reported to medical officers about 35 times between 1896 and 1907 but was not admitted to hospital. Most of these may be routine checks on movement between camps in India.He had been re-engaged in the 15th Battalion Royal Artillery on 12.8.03 for a total service of 21 years.In 1914 he was promoted to Warrant Officer and appointed Sergeant Major. He was discharged on 4 Feb 1916 at the end of his second period of engagement which had been extended under a wartime condition He had served 22 years 213 days, all of which counted towards his pension. His pension was increased to £126.12s.4d a year from 1 Jan 1944 to 31 Dec. 1945 and by 1947 was £136.7s.0d. On discharge he gave his next of kin as Emily MORCOMBE (mother) of South Lambeth Road, Clapham.
