OCCUPATION:
BEF 1841-AFT 1841: Domestic Servant in All Saints, Southampton.Occupation Note: Working for William PAGE. We cannot be certain that the Anne in the 1841 census is the Anne from Drewsteignton and later Sydney.
GENERAL NOTE:
This Anne seems to be the most likely candidate to fit the Ann MORCOMBE in this report in "The Maitland Mercury and Hunter River General Advertiser" of Saturday 4 May 1850INFANTICO.-BATHURST.-An inquest washeld at the Black Bull Inn, Bathurst, on Friday, the 26th April, on the body of a new-born 'infant, found in a well on the premises of Mr.Mockett, in Howick-street. From the evidenceof Mr. Mockett, it appeared he discovered thewater in the well had become tainted. Hecaused a man.named Lewin to be lowered downthe well, who found the body of a male infantfloating on the surface of the water. It wasdrawn up, and found to be in a very decomposedstate, and appeared to have been in the waterseveral days. A woman named Ann Morcombe, who had been in his employ for some time past, had been discharged about a fortnight before. He observing that she appeared to be in a for-ward state of pregnancy, suspicion fell on her. She, and another woman named Jane Downey, were apprehended. It appeared also from hisevidence, that about eight days previous to thediscovery of the body, the prisoner Morcombehad called at the residence of her late master,in company with Downey, and a man with awheelbarrow to take her boxes away. On thisoccasion she was observed by Mr. Mockett to beleaning on a gate-post. He did not notice atthe time of the circumstance, but on thefollowing day his cook called the attention ofMr. Mockett to some stains on the seat andfloor of a water-closet, where Morcombe hadbeen seen to enter, and which stains were tracedto the gate where the prisoner had been seenstanding by Mr. Mockett. There was nothingat all to connect Jane Downey with the trans-action further than she was in Morcombe'scompany when she went to Mr. Mockett's forher boxes. Dr. Machattie attended, and statedthat he had examined the prisoner Morcombe, upon whom there were every symptoms of adelivery within ten or twelve days. He hadalso examined the body of the infant, and as faras its decomposed state would enable him tojudge he had no doubt it had been born alive, and that death had been caused by suffocation.Ann Miller deposed, that she was present at themedical examination, and that immediatelyafter, the prisoner told her that Mrs. Downeyhad no knowledge of her delivery. The coro-ner recapitulated the evidence at some lengthand perspicuity, when the jury returned a ver-dict of wilful murder against Ann Morcombe.Downey acquitted.-Herald Correspondent. If the mother is correctly identified, the child would have been conceived shortly before or after Ann[e]'s departure from Southampton. There is no record of her sentence. The only Anne in my almost complete NSW records for the period who might fit her isAnne MORCOM (02052)BIRTH: NB Insufficient evidence to be certain that her maiden name was MORCOM.DEATH:1877 in New South Wales NSW AUS. Reg.No. 1877/8136. Daughter of William and AnneI cannot see a William living in NSW as early as this.I notice that Anne, daughter of William and Susan, had an elder sister who had an illegitimate child and later committed suicide.

GENERAL NOTE:
It is interesting to note that Thomas Yelland MORCOMBE and Fanny RIDGWAY had nine children between 1883 and 1898. One boy died in infancy but the other four brothers were still alive when Arnold Edward wrote his account of the family in 1971. Two sisters were still living and two had died at the age of 84 and 70.
