GENERAL NOTES:
In the same graveyard as Thomas YELLAND only the largest stone is still left in its original position, the rest of the small graveyard now being grass. The inscription on this grave, in the top corner of the cemetery, is: "Memory of BenjaminYelland who died in the parish of Lamerton March 29 1876 aged 63 years - Weep not for me my Wife most dear/I am not dead but sleeping here:/As I am now so must you be/Prepare for Death and follow me". A 1873 Directory of Devon lists a BenjaminYELLAND, farmer, in North Brenton. Benjamin is possibly the child of Mr YELLAND and Joannah of Ashwater parish, who was born c. 1817 in Germansweek parish, Devon [NB according to his MI he should have been born in 1813].In 1851 this Benjamin was an unmarried farmer of 150 acres at Charndown [?Churndon] nr Bridestowe, Okehampton. Also in the household was his 81 year old mother and 44 year old unmarried brother John, both of them annuitants. John was also born in Germansweek. A short distance away in North Brenton village is the Church of England graveyard which contains a monument inscribed "Sacred to the memory of Edwin B Yelland beloved husband of Kate (of Yellands Brentor). Died March 1st 1942. Aged 78 years. Also Kate wife of the above died 29th Jan 1946."He is probably Edwin Benjamin YELLAND born c. 1865 in Bridestowe parish. His father was William YELLAND born c. 1812 in Germansweek.
Benjamin and John were brothers from Germansweek, ten miles north of North Brentor. William YELLAND, the father of Edwin of Yelland farm also came from Germansweek, so is quite likely to be related to Benjamin and John.
Thomas YELLAND was born in Stokeclimsland CON which is about ten miles SE of North Brentor, and the only link, at present, with the other three YELLANDs is that they were all four connected with North Brentor.
In the 1851 census thre was a James YELLAND, age 57, farm labourer, b. Milton Abbot DEV and his family living in North Brentor. Milton Abbot is halfway between North Brentor and Stoke Climsland, the birth place of Thomas YELLAND
Yelland farm is on the left hand side of the road from North Brent village to Brent Tor, a prominent hill on the peak of which stands an ancient church (See maps in file). The farm was not occupied by a YELLANDS family in 1851 or 1881. Edwin was, presumably living there when he died in 1946, but in 1901 he was at Low Park, Brentor. It was later occupied for a period by a family who renamed it "Kilimanjara", but in 2003 it had been unoccupied for some time. The house seemed in reasonable condition externally but the farm outbuildings were in a very decrepit state
