GENERAL NOTES:
Joel and his family have not been found in the England & Wales 1841 census. His death record indicates that he arrived in NSW c. 1840. Joel, Anne, Jabez and frederick proably arrived together on the Alfred in 1840, along with other Bounty immigrants Joel, from Gwennap was unusual in arriving as early as 1840. Most of the Cornish miners who emigrated from Gwennap and other mining areas to Australia arrived c. 1850 or later.Jocelyn LLOYD, a correspondent, who is researching the supposedly complete records of arriving convicts in NSW, could not find any record of Joel or any other MORCOM. "MargM", the list administrator of AUS-NSW-SYDNEY@rootsweb.com, found the following death record in a book on Colonial Inquests for the Maitland area published by the Maitland Family History Circle:MORCOM, Joel N, age c. 80 at HM Gaol, Maitland, 24 June 1866".
The Maitland Mercury of Saturday 9 June 1866 reported that at the Maitland District Court to be held on Tuesday 12 June the list of cases to be tried by District Court Judge M'FARLAND included James DODD jun. v. Joel Newton MORCOM.Maitland Mercury Tuesday, 26 June 1866Death From Old Age and Exhaustion.- An inquest was held by the Coroner, on Sunday, at the gaol, on the body of Joel N. Morcom, aged nearly eighty years. It appeared that Morcom had been committed to gaol for fourteen days in default of the payment of £15 odd, for wages and costs. He was in a very weakly state when received into the gaol, and was at once attended by the visiting surgeon. He was made as warm and comfortable as possible, supplied with stimulants and nourishment, and otherwise treated kindly; but on Sunday morning he died, purely from exhaustion and old age. The jury returned a verdict in accordance with the medical evidence, the substance of which is stated above.Inquest No. 19561, Held 24th June 1866, Held at H.M.’s Gaol, East Maitland, Joel N. Morcom, Held before I. Thomson, Coroner, Finding- Natural Causes, forwarded to Auditor General 13 July 1866.Maitland Courthouse Death Record:Morcom, Joel Newton, died 24 June 1866, Gaol, East Maitland, 75 years, buried 25 June 1866, Wesleyan Burial Ground, West Maitland. Born Cornwall, England. 26 years in NSW, Inquest held Her Majesty’s Gaol, East Maitland 24 June 1866-infirmity and old age. The cemetery Joel is buried in is now called Okehampton Cemetery. Okehampton is on the bank of the Hunter River just on the outskirts of Maitland and has been flooded on numerous occasions. This has left many of the headstones under several feet of mud and therefore not visible.
There is an advertisement in the maitland Mercury and Hunter River General Advertiserof the 16th January 1866 for the sale at bolwarra of Joel's farm stock on the 18th January. On sale were 4 "splendid working bullocks", 7 horses , 30 tons of lucerne hay and varied farm equipment. "The proprietor's intention is to lay his farm down to lucerne" so he would not require the livestock and associated equipement.

If Annie Searle is the same person as Ada Annie, from Sydney, who may have named her son after a placename - Sydney Martyn, then it is possible that Cawley is not a father or other family name, but the now deserted Cawley settlement nr Helensburgh outside Sydney. Anne Searle MORCOM's mother was buried at Helensburgh in 1899 so there could have been McLAUCHLAN relatives there earlierNB Could her name have been changed later to Mary Searle MORCOM or did she die in Sydney in 1886?
