Encyclopaedia Britannica: After serving his apprenticeship with a druggist in his native town of Sunderland, he became first assistant and later partner in a firm of manufacturing chemists in Newcastle. .... In 1879, SWAN patented bromide paper. In 1860 he produced an electric lamp with a carbon filament - this was substantially the method adopted by EDISON nearly twenty years later. SWAN devised a cotton thread "parchmentized" by the action of sulphuric acid. On 20 Oct 1886, he gave at Newcastle the first public exhibition on a large scale of electric lighting by means of glow lamps. After many other developments, he was knighted in 1904 and held many other honours.
