On 1 July 1927 purchased Stanley S. MCNEIL and Ralph W. HYDE's 1845 acre farm in Waddy Forest. The 1845 acres consisted of Lots M1278 and M1279 of Victoria 2023 (originally taken up by MCNEIL and HYDE in July 1925. William and Philip survived the depression years of 1929-33, helped by good seasons.One of the horses he brought from South Australia was the well bred horse Brylass of which he was justly proud. Frank THOMAS the local bushranger also took a likely to Brylass and as was his custom took off with the animal. Mounted police and an Aboriginal tracker found Brylass abandoned and exhausted three days later on a neighbour's property.In 1925 donated 15 acres from the corner of his farm in Waddy Forest for use as a recreation ground. The 15 acres was later used for the site of the Waddy Hall.William retired to Armadale in the early years of World War II, and the farm was taken over by his son Tom until his early death..

We are uncertain where in East Town [or was it Easton Town?] Registration area William Guest MORCOMBEwas living in 1841. His next door neighbours then were William GUEST, age 20 [i.e. 20 to 24] who was living with Thomas HOCKADAY's family and on the other side John Guest , age 30, and his family. Both GUESTS were agricultural labourers and most likely related to William Guest's mother Sarah nee GUEST. In the 1841 census there was a Jane MORCOMBE, age ?21?, living with the miller William ELLIS and his family at Brightley Mill. She is probably the Jane who, like William Guest MORCOMBE, was descended from Matthew MORCOMBE and Elizabeth STANLAKE who married in 1788. In 1851 William Guest MORCOMBE was at one of the Brightley Cottages, probably in a row of five small cottages next to Brightley Mills. It is likely that he was in the end cottage nearest to Brightley Mill. In the next cottage was the household of James JACKMAN. Was this a relative of Joanna JACKMAN who married William Guest's uncle William MORCOMBE, innkeeper in Okehampton?At Brightley Farm in 1851 was William GUEST, age 35, farm labourer, and his wife Harriet and young daughters Sarah and Amelia. This may be the same William as the next door neighbour of William Guest MORCOMBE in 1841. By 1881 Brightley Farm, halfway between Brightley Mill and Okehampton Town was abandoned. In 2002 the site was occupied by an industrial estate , the large Okehampton Glassworks still using the Brightley Farm address.
Four Williams died in Okehampton in 1846, 1848, 1850 and 1863, so we cannot be certain that one of the others was also born c. 1798/9 and could be the husband of Jane. Jane's husband was alive in 1851, so may have died in 1863.

Unit embarked from Sydney, New South Wales, on board HMAT A21 Marere on 20 February 1915. he served initially in Egypt, Gallipoli, Cairom Maadi, Tel el Kebir (during which period he was hospitalised for 42 days for "debility"). he sailed from Alexandria to Marseilles arriving in France on 24 June 1916. He was poison gassed on 2nd Nov 1917 and treated at the 56th General Hospital. On 10 Nov 1917 he was transferred to Norfolk War Hospital in Norwich from which he was discharged on 21 Dec 1917. The doctor at Norwich wrote that his "heart was somewhat irregular and rapid, which became more marked on exercise". He suffered from shortage of breath and a cough, and was diagnosed as suffering from laryngitis and bronchitis. The Medical Board concluded his disability was permanent and he was "permanently unfit for general service" He sailed on 10 March 1918 from Devonport on the "Durham Castle". However, he is recorded as arriving in Australia on the "Orontes" on 13 May 1918 and being discarged from the AIF "in consequence of medical unfitness" on 21 August 1918.. His death soon after the war and inclusion in the Roll of Honour suggests he may have died of the effects of the gassing. He was awarded the Military Medal on 20 Nov 1917. His son Stanley applied in 1967 for his father to be posthumously awarded the Gallipoli Medallion.

17Aug1941-18Nov1943: Pilot Officer for 622 Squadron, RAAFOccupation Note: Jim enrolled in the RAAF Reserve on 10 Jan 1941. In his application, he described himself as a farm labourer. His application form also reveals that he had been 'discharged from 28th Battalion Militia for being under age'. He had served only for one month!Jim [RAAF No. 415264] was called up on 17 Aug 1941 at No.4 RAAF Recruiting Centre, St George's Terrace, Perth and was posted to No.5 Initial Training School at Pearce for three months, then to No.9 Elementary Flying Training School at Cunderdin on 13 Nov 1941 followed by a further three months at Geraldton's No.4 Service Flying Training School where he graduated as a pilot. After yet another three months at Embarkation Depots at Subiaco (WA) and Bradfield Park (NSW), Jim embarked at Sydney on 24 Aug 1942 destination UK, arriving at RAAF Bournemouth on 18 Nov 1942, then transferred to No.11 PDRC Brighton until 15 Mar 1943. From here he was posted to No.15 (P) Advanced Flying Unit at Greenham Common until 4 May when he was transferred to No.26 Operations Training Unit until 12 Aug. For the next month, he was attached to 1651 Communication Unit at Waterbeach.Jim joined No.622 Squadron at Mildenhall, Suffolk on 10 Sep 1943, exactly one month after it had been formed. He was promoted to the rank of Pilot Officer on 22 Oct 1943. RAF Squadron 622 was equipped with Stirling aircraft, `the first four engined bomber to serve in the RAF but by the end of 1943 it was woefully obsolete. Not only was it difficult to maintain, fly and land, but it could not climb above 16,000 feet with a bomb load. It was said that Halifax and Lancaster crews would give a mighty cheer when they were told that Stirlings would be on the same operation for they knew that far below them the Stirlings would be the first to 'get the chop' from the flak guns and night fighters.' Ref: Cedric Ralph.On 15 Nov 1943, one year to the day of Jim's arrival in England, he departed Mildenhall in No.3 Group at 17.10 hours in Stirling EF1238 coded GI-D to bomb the industrial areas of the cities of Mannheim/Ludwigshafen and crashed at Lachalade (Meuse), 30 kilometres west of Verdun, France. One member (Sgt.R Harper) of the crew of eight was made a PoW and those who died are buried in the Lachalade churchyard. They are Flight Sergeant HLR Richards RNZAF, Sergeant A E Sly RAF, Flight Sergeant D S Smith RAF, Sergeant S A Thomas, Flight Sergeant R M Conroy RAAF, Sergeant A A Ough RAF and Pilot Officer William James Morcombe, aged 20 years and 10 months."He is included in the Wesley School Roll of Honour Circular for the 1939-45 War.From The North Midland Times newspaper, Friday 4 August 1944 [cited by the Carnamah Historical Society web site]:"Vale Pilot Officer W. J. Morcombe. Having been missing since November 18, 1943, it has now been officially announced that P./O. William James Morcombe, of Waddy Forest, is presumed dead. The only son of Mr. Phil and Mrs. Stella Morcombe, formerly of Waddy Forest, the late P./O. Morcombe, was well and favourably known throughout the Coorow and Waddy Forest district. He is the second member of this highly respected family to pay the supreme sacrifice, the other being his cousin Flt-Liet. Keith Morcombe (D.F.C.). At the time of his death the late "Jim" Morcombe was aged 21 years. The sympathy of the whole district goes out to his sorrowing father, mother and sister Helen, who are left to face this irretrievable loss. At such times as these, mere words cannot express the sorrow which is felt at the loss of these gallant young men, but those who are near and dear to them, will always be able to treasure the memory that they died nobly doing their duty to their country.".
