Residence Notes:
Initially, on arrival in Portage, James and Harriet could not find a house to rent so moved into Fort Winnebago which was a mile from Portage. The farm they moved into was probably on the Flats between the Wisconsin and Fox Rivers [Great Flats today?]
Starting on March 17 1863 James Dodd, his wife and four sons travelled by covered wagon NW from Portage, Wisconsin crossing the R.Mississippi into Minnesota at a crossing near La Crescent on March 28, 1863, having travelled approx. 100 mls in 12 days.
In her account of the journey Helen MORCOMB (nee GALLEGHER) writes that James had traded a team of horses for a yolk of oxen to pull the covered wagon that carried their provisions, bed and stove. They also drove several cows and some young stock.
They stopped at New Lisbon a day, 2 days at Dividing Ridge because of snow, reached N.La Cross 27/3, and crossed Mississippi 28/3 by ferry to La Crescent. An Indian massacre in Oct 1862 of over 1000 whites had made it risky to settle in S. Minnesota.
They settled in an area which was still considered frontier, farmers having just started to break the heavy sod of the Root River watershed. On 8th April 1863 James D and Harriett bought 80 acres of "wild land" from a Mr Hazleton who had an adjoining farm
Helen MORCOMB adds that James went further to Witoka but returned to purchase land which had been offered to them at $5 per acre in Ridgeway. They camped there a few days and a neighbour then went to Winona to purchase lumber for a 12x12 earth floor shack
In Autumn 1863 James D (then 39) was drafted for the Civil War but found exempt from service at an examination in Rochester. In Spring 1874 the MORCOMBs bought a further ten acres and double log house from John LOCKWOOD at a price of $250.
In the 1880 Federal Census of MN, James is at Pleasant Hill
The second home of James Dodd and Harriet in Ridgeway is now owned by Raymond PLUGHOEFT, whose grandmother was Madeline MORCOMB, a grand daughter of James and Harriet. A family reunion was held there in 2004.
The original homestead, about a mile and a half away, was, in 2004, still owned by Jim MORCOMB but rented out.
OCCUPATIONS:
BEF 1860-AFT 1860: Farm Labourer in Fort Winnebago, nr Portage.
1863 Farmer in Houston Co. MI.Occupation Note: rbailey@tznet.com reports Helen MORCOMB (Arlie's wife) as writing that James Dodd bought a farm in Houston Co. in 1863. Houston Co. adjoins Winona Co..
BEF 1870-AFT 1900: Farmer in Pleasant Hill, Winona County.Occupation Note: According to the schedule in the 1870 US Census James had 75 acres of improved land and 15 acres of woodland. Cash value of land $2000 and farming implements etc $275. Total labour charges during year, excluding board was $10.Livestock: 2 horses, 6 milch cows, other cattle 8, and mules 4, total value $705. Crops (in bushells): spring wheat 245. winter wheat 286, indian corn 75, and oats 120.
GENERAL NOTE:
In 1870 James MORCOMB of Pleasant Hill had 65 acres of improved land and 15 acres of woodland. His ?farm? was valued at $2,000 and his farm implementsetc at $275. he had 2 horses, 6 milch cows and 4 ????. The value of all his livestock was $705. He had produced in the year before the census: 245 bushels of spring wheat, 280 bushels of winter wheat, 75 acres of Indian corn and 120 bushels of oats. [NB uncertain if record continues on previous or next page.]In 1900 James and Harriet had the four children and 19 grandchildren living in Winona County.
