GENERAL NOTES:
After the death of both Mary Anne and William SCOTT, Edward (the grandfather of Valerie I LEVISTON), Henry and William were placed in the care of Ballarat Orphanage. Edward was registered under that name, but baptised as Richard, the name by which he was always known. His grandmother Jane had registered him as Edward but neglected to tell his parents what she had done. Richard only discovered his legal name when, at the age of 21, he obtained a copy of his birth certificate. As an old man Richard often sat under two large cypress trees in the road outside the Orphanage. He told his grandchildren, Valerie LEVISTON and her sister, that he had planted one of the trees, but they did not believe him until 30 years later they discovered that he had been in the orphanage as a child.The two year old Thomas Whatmough SCOTT went to live with his grand-mother, Jane who was by then married to Thomas WHATMOUGH (it may be Jane who registered Tom's birth naming him after her husband). Valerie LEVISTON relates that Thomas WHATMOUGH was said to be a cruel man who treated Thomas very harshly and had him digging potatoes at a very young age. Tom eventually ran away and was taken into the home of George SNELL, Mary Anne's brother, and Jane Bailey CROSS.
Three year old Matilda was taken into the home of Matilda (Mary Anne's sister) and Henry Gardner.The later history of this family and their descendants is described in a paper by Valerie I. LEVISTON in our files.
