A query posted on Devon-L regarding "died from fright of the mother" produced several suggestions. The concensus was that it probably meant that the mother was thought to have been frightened by some event and gone into labour early, the baby then being too premature to survive. One correspondent cited the phrase "Mother's supposed fright at birth" referring to the admission of children with Down's Syndrome into a lunatic asylum
