GENERAL NOTE:
The DOVELL family continues to live at Combe Martin until the present day (1998).Notes by Mr Roger A Burton about John the elder and John the younger (extracted from the North Devon Journal and other sources):One or other of the John Dovells had boats built at Newberry, Combe Martin; was Master of a Pack of Beagles, built the Drill Hall in Combe Martin and was a Lime Quarry owner and lime and manure dealer. The latter certainly applies to John DOVELL, the younger, but probably to his father as well. The Post Office Directory of 1866 records a John DOVELL, coal merchant. John DOVELL, the younger, was also involved in trying to promote South Combe Martin Mine in 1880, and a John DOVELL advertised in the North Devon Journal for miners to dig iron ore on Hangman Hill, Combe Martin, for the Royal British Stannery (no date). The North Devon Journal of 20 Dec 1883 records a lime feast held at the house of Messrs Richard & John DOVELL, but Mr John Dovell was too ill to attend.
