GENERAL NOTES:
Entry in Woman's Who's Who of America, New York: American Commonwealth Company, 1914.MORCOMBE, Katherine Elizabeth (Mrs. Joseph E. Morcombe), Storm Lake, Iowa.Newspaper writer; b. Dubuque, Iowa, April 26, 1876; dau. Joseph and Anna (Wissman) Sohm; ed. high school, Sutherland (Iowa) Coll., Buena Vista, Storm Lake, Iowa; m. Newell, Iowa, May 24, 1908, Joseph E. Morcombe. Began newspaper work in 1902, purchased plant in 1905; taught school two years. Favors woman suffrage. Active in newspaper work for suffrage.Newspaper Report Jan 27th 1908:"NEWSPAPER EDITOR'S PLEA FOR A HUSBAND CAUSES AN INTERESTED EDITOR TO STOP HIS PRESSES: It seems like the last straw for editor Elizabeth Sohm was that she failed to secure a share of official county printing to support her newspaper in Storm Lake, Iowa -- the Vidette. [It's a great name for a newspaper, a variant of vedette.] So, this week, she decided to take advantage of a certain leap year tradition. So, she printed a card with the following message [emphasis added]:A constant fight for what rightfully belongs to her is a wear and tear on the nervous system of any woman, and we have come to the belief that in order to stay in newspaper work and maintain our health, we will have to marry some good printer who can do the FIGHTING and SWEARING for us. This is leap year, and may be considered a proposal by any one who would be qualified to fill the vacancy so evident in The Vidette office. The notice caught the attention of bachelor G.A. Craig, editor of The Lytton (Iowa) Star. An item in today's New York Times says "he stopped his press" and printed the following note [emphasis added]:We believe we are eligible to fill the vacancy, which Miss Sohm feels exists in her print shop. We are a Missouri Democrat of forty years' standing, considered a good printer, and CAN SWEAR FLUENTLY IN SEVEN DIFFERENT LANGUAGES. We agree to accept Miss Sohm's proposal on condition that she will show credentials as to COOKING ABILITIES and express a willingness to darn our socks and mend the gable end of our trousers when needed. As soon as a favorable reply is received we stand ready to close the deal.".Interest in the next edition of the Vidette is likely to skyrocket, as Storm Lakers await Miss Sohm's reply."Elizabeth seems to have been quite a "modern" lady, keeping her maiden name despite having been married to Joseph for almost ten years, and writing in the above slightly risque style
Olin SOHM nephew of Elizabeth MORCOMBE donated a large number of papers collected by his aunt about the Californian \Congress of Parents and Teachers to San Francuisco Public Office. The papers covered 1914 to 1937 and are now in San Francisco Public Library. The library catalogue records that Elizabeth was born in Iowa in 1874, joined the Iowa PTA in 1918, moved to California in 1923, and died iin Alameda County CA in 1957. The Introduction to the Collection includes the following entry:"A native of Iowa, Elizabeth Morcombe, became active in the Second District in 1923. Her previous newspaper experience prepared her for her first PTA position as publicity chairman for her unit, then as district publicity chair, and ultimately, publicity chair for the Californian Congress of Parents and Teachers. She taught other units how to generate and document their unit’s publicity and wrote a regular Sunday column for the club in the San Francisco Examiner. In 1935, her peers elected her President of the Second District. Described by columnist Ethel Bogardus as a highly organized individual, thorough and complete, her two-year administration was marked by outstanding accomplishments in child welfare. Upon her term’s conclusion, the district recommended she have a place on the national board and presented her with a life membership in the National Congress.2 Morcombe maintained the organization’s publicity records. Morcombe was married to Joseph E. Morcombe, editor of Masonic World, but their union produced no children. Elizabeth Morcombe died in Alameda County on May 12, 1957 at the age of 83."
